Butchokoy's Bath & Chillaxing!

This little big boy here enjoys his bath like it’s one big party!

He doesn’t even want to get out of the water! I think he’ll be a great swimmer, unlike his mom who is scared of the water. Tee hee. Note: Must buy him a rubber ducky soon.

This Little Mao received some gift packs recently, too!

Now bath time is more fun! Got so much Milk Bath to use!

Big thanks to Mommy Anna and Mommy Yvette and of course, to Johnson’s!

My Mikko is really growing up fast!

Really big boy now. :) But he will always be my little baby Mao ^_^

Love you butchokoy

At 3-1/2 months, you’d think this boy is older.  Now weighing 8.5kg and 24" tall! :) And laughs like he is truly amused, doesn’t he?

More laughter. A child’s laughter. Totally priceless.

Flavor Your Life: The taste of Italy, the feel of Christmas, and the Filipino spirit.

pizzahutflavoryourlife:

There was a time in my life when all I wanted was to travel and eat delectable food. Sometimes I still get that feeling overwhelming me and my thoughts would always wander off to good ol’ Italy. It’s been my life’s dream to visit that place and eat all the pizza I want! But alas, I cannot afford…

God made the world out of His dreams
Of magic mountains, oceans and streams,
Prairies and plans and wooded land,
Then paused and thought “I need someone to stand
On top of mountains, to conquer the seas,
Explore the plains and climb the trees.
Someone to start out small and to grow,
Sturdy, strong as a tree…" And so,
He created boys, full of spirit and fun,
To explore and conquer, to romp and run.
With dirty faces and banged up chins,
With courageous hearts and boyish grins.
When He had completed the task He’d begun
He surely said “A job well done".

Happy Quarter Year Old Dearest Mikko Mao!

Love you baby boy!

Immunization 101: Cost & Necessity

I must admit that memory is not my strongest point. I know I have short-term memory now and as much as I want it to work better with Mikko’s immunization schedule, alas I can only leave it all up to the pediatrician. Or her secretary who never fails to call me up reminding that it’s time for another shot. :)

I mean, take a look at this chart:

Que horror! You think I can keep track of all that even with the help of online schedulers and apps? No, thank you. That’s why I think it’s important to pick your pediatrician! You gotta have one that REALLY CARES for your child.

Although as far as vaccines are concerned, there are health centers who can provide you with the assistance and even give free shots! But those are (again) scheduled and I don’t think that my memory is really thrilled to bits about that.

Thank goodness for my pedia. Hi, Doc Lynette Co! She fusses about Mikko as if it’s her own child! :D We couldn’t be happier!

Here’s Mikko getting his shots last month:

Poor baby! :(

With all the medical advancement in the world today, you’d think there’s an easier way. Yes, there is. Now we got all these 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 shots! I can’t imagine watching my baby getting all those shots in the chart, ONE BY ONE! Hmmm… can you?

At birth, he was given his BCG and Hepatitis B vaccines. And last month we got these two:

Infanrix Hexa (Combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis, hepatitis B, enhanced inactivated polio vaccine & Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine.) and Rotarix (Active immunization of infants against gastroenteritis due to rotavirus.).

The first was injected to his thigh and the latter was taken orally. We were told to expect that Mikko might get a fever that night after getting vaccinated but he didn’t. Hmmm.

Word to the wise, these vaccines can cost pretty darn high so you might want to check out your options. Let’s just say for these two, it can set you back 5 to 6 thousand pesos. Eeek! But also consider this, if you get shots individually, depending on where you will get them, the price would be the same or even higher.

The most recent shot Mikko had was for Prevenar 13. (Active immunization for the prevention of invasive disease, pneumonia & acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in infant & children 6 wk-5 yr.)

And that’s another 4+K, well spent anyway. ;) But 4+K! That’s the same amount I used to pay monthly for my phone bills back in college. FML.

With the high cost of immunization, you might be wondering, is it really necessary? Well, immunizations were made for protection against serious illnesses. You know, like polio, tetanus, measles, mumps, and the seasonal flu. Bacteria/viruses = immune system = antibodies. You remember your Science & Health class? So yes, if you ask me. I think it’s really important as much as well-child checkups. Especially for the first 6 months of life. I just don’t think it’s worth the risk so I won’t take my chances. I guess when you’re a mom, you’re willing to do anything just to make sure your baby gets only the best. And whatever it takes. ;)

Pedia advised that the next shot will be for DPT2, OPV2, HCP B3, but hey, why confuse myself? I’ll just wait for the secretary to call me and say it’s time! Til then I’ll have to start $$$aving. Ka-ching!

Hmmm. Nobody said raising a kid was cheap. Yup, nobody said that.

Amazing Dryness!

A few days ago, I received a package delivered by our suking courier. To my surprise, the contents were not for me! Addressed to me anyway since it was my name clearly plastered on the package… But it was actually for our little butterball.

I had forgotten all about this! I had signed up at Drypers’ really cool interactive website some time early September, weeks after Mikko was born, as I was surfing the interwebs and landed on a link for free samples. What can I say? I never even thought the day would come that I’d be browsing parenting forums! Anyways, add me up as a FRIEND. My username is MyMaria. (You can sign up HERE, that is if you haven’t already yet.)

It took a while to get here but, nevertheless, they delivered! The Little Mao has gotten big so the diapers were a wee bit small for him already. Oh well, the best things in life are free, diba? ^_^

Is it just me or is Mikko showing more and more of his Asian heritage? The little big chinky-eyed boy!!! Just how adorable is he!?!? It just cannot be denied. I want to squiiiiishhh the little guy every time. Hehe.

And boy, do they grow fast, huh? He’s barely 2 months old but it seems like he’s ready to sit up straight any time now. (Most of the time I think he’s older since he’s quite the big boy that he is! Toinks!)

Til then! Thanks, Drypers

Having a baby is SO NOT cheap!

If you are a woman who is currently pregnant, wanting to get pregnant, or had gotten pregnant by choice or not yet who wants to know the REAL PRICE to pay for pregnancy, then this here’s blog post is for you. (Although it may not be entirely applicable to you, geologically speaking.)

Pregnancy comes with a great deal of sacrifice. It’s a beautiful thing but behind all that glitter/gold and pregnancy glow, there’s a high price to pay at the end of the day. I admit that we weren’t really prepared for this pregnancy — financially that is. And if you’re the type who lives from paycheck to paycheck, then it’s about time you re-adjust your budgeting and do better in your financial management if you find yourself in this particular circumstance.

You might be thinking, "Boo.. I got a stable job," or "My husband gets a 5-digit salary every 15th and 30th of the month!" Well, let me tell you this. It doesn’t hurt to be really prepared.

We live in a small town (thank God!) and the cost of living here is pretty much half (maybe even a fourth?) of what it’s like to live in a big city. So when I state values in the next couple of paragraphs, do me a favor and do the math by multiplying them either by 2 or 3 or adjust accordingly to where you are located.

The first expense on the glorious road of pregnancy to childbirth is the test. You can have your pregnancy tests via home kits you can buy at pharmacies and drug stores for more or less a hundred bucks, or opt for a more serious check with a doctor and a blood or urine exam which will cost a bit more. Your choice.

I tested 3 times just to confirm my pregnancy. Why? Not because we’re just OC like that, but I didn’t quite trust myself to ever get pregnant. I’ve been told after various medical check-ups that I need fertility pills and since I got PCOS that it may be difficult for me to conceive because I don’t even bleed regularly. Did it have something to do with anorexia or the fact I drank Brazilian coffee coupled with lots of taurine from energy drinks? I really don’t know. My pregnancy, as far as I am concerned, is a miracle. It is a gift. I thank God everyday for it.

Three pregnancy tests confirmed positive. Whopeeee!

And then there’s the prenatal visits. The OB-GYNE told me I was already late taking folic acid & iron supplements and multivitamins for this pregnancy because we found out when I was already 10 weeks with child. Still, Mikko came out perfectly so do not stress yourself so much if you haven’t taken supplements in the first couple of weeks. There’s always time to do so. You got 9 months to go! The most important thing now is to treat your body as a temple. Goodbye wonderland! No more drinking/smoking.

Receipts from prenatal visits. Ours was for PHP200 per visit.

Take note prenatal visits lasts for 9 months as well. Depending on your doctor, you could be charged a lot or you can have Philhealth cover it all. Ah, yes. Philhealth — such a life saver. (More on this later!) But the prenatal supplements + vitamins are not covered, mind you. I took Folicard (PHP7)/Sangobion (PHP16) plus Mosvit (PHP8.70).

Next, there are ultrasounds, glucose screening, urinalysis, blood exams, etc. depending on tests needed to make sure your pregnancy doesn’t involve any complications. During the last trimester, you’ll have the option to get the 3D/4D ultrasound and a biophysical exam as well if needed. And all those I just mentioned do not come cheap. Again, depending on where you would get them, if they are covered by your insurance, or if the doctor is your friend, you might want to stretch your budget or cut down your expenses to be able to afford all those. If my memory serves me correct, here in the province pelvic ultrasounds cost around PHP500 to PHP800. The 3D/4D one that comes with a DVD of images and video is more expensive at around PHP2,500 to PHP3,000.

I’m just happy I know my doctors well enough that they give me discounts during check-ups and such, plus I get to charge my laboratory bills at the hospital under my mom’s name. Our hospital, OSPA-FMC (Ormoc Sugar Planters Association - Farmers Medical Clinic) is a healthcare facility ran by the profit and investments of the sugarplanters. So there.

Anyways, I don’t mean to scare you with all the expenses. I’m just giving you the lowdown. Honestly, I had to switch to cheaper brands of pantyliners, tissue paper, cotton buds, etc. from my usual ones just to have a little extra. Tee hee! Wa-is si Lumen!

Also, you must be prepared for the rainy days. I didn’t see that amoebiasis coming! And it didn’t happen just once, but TWICE!!! So it was rather a big pain in the ass (literally!) if you ask me. You gotta be careful of what you eat. Didn’t they say you are what you eat? LOL.

So let’s move on to the actual delivery date, hospital bills and doctor’s fees! This is where SSS maternity benefits and Philhealth really play a huge and important role. If you ain’t got both, I suggest you hurry up and make sure you got a least one of them or better yet, BOTH!

Take a look at the breakdown below:

Since our Little Mao was born near-term, he had to be put in the NICU for about 3 days to get his condition stabilized. That’s another 12K on top of my own hospital bill. Also there are medications you need to take! So all in all, the gross amount of the bill was PhP85 to 90K! My God. That’s a 15" Macbook Pro! Tee hee. If not for our hospital discount, Philhealth, and doctor’s discounts (Take note, there’s an anesthesiologist, a cardiologist, your OB-GYNE, and an assistant!)… That’s a pretty huge amount to pay! And also I’m really hoping to get an SSS refund this month or the next so we can benefit from that, too.

Of course, it’s a different story altogether now if I had given birth at a birthing center, which I think is also pretty awesome, or if it was at a government/public hospital. I asked my cousin-nurse-midwife-friend how much it would cost to give birth and he told me roughly only PHP3,000! Holy shhhhhh… And if you got Philhealth, some mothers only get to pay PHP500 to give birth at the District Hospital. HOMAYGULAY!

No wonder a lot of women still don’t mind getting knocked up or worry about giving birth to a dozen kids because in some remote places, I think you can even give birth for free (as told by my yaya who gave birth at their house with the aid of a ‘mananabang’!) :P

Anyways, that’s for normal delivery. Mikko Vincenzo was born via C-section so I guess that’s why we had to pay a lot more than the usual. But honestly, the cost is nothing compared to when you see your baby! Come on, you know it’s PRICELE$$! So if you’re gonna ask, am I willing to go through it all over again? I’d say YES… BUT NOT RIGHT NOW. :)

I still haven’t gotten used to all the sleepless nights. Perhaps if we can already win in a diaper changing contest, we might consider going for baby #2. Until then… we have a little juggernaut to nurture and love.

Bottomline is having a baby is a big decision to make. I just hope women out there are responsible enough to take this issue seriously. Because the real issue doesn’t just end with pregnancy and delivery a child, there’s the actual task of raising a kid and being a parent. Are you ready for that?

So if you ask me about the RH bill, I don’t know what to say. I haven’t really thought about it, or even read about it. It’s really up to the woman I guess. Do we really need a law to follow? Or do we just follow our instincts and weigh the consequences of our actions ourselves? Either way, being a mother and having a baby is not easy. Some are born to be super moms, some perhaps aren’t cut out for the job. As for me, I could really use all the help.

But whatever the case may be, nothing beats having a kid of your own and being able to say, "KITA NA JUD KO SA AKO LIWAT!" (Maski simud ra gyud diay naliwat sa ako! Hehe!)

JOHNSON’s My Kid’s Growing Up So Fast CONTEST!

Take the love of the parents and sprinkle with heavenly spice, mold into a creation, only after the angels have stirred twice.

Such tiny hands with soft and smooth skin. Can you believe my boy’s already a month old? WOW! Time sure does fly and how much he’s grown is just amazing! I feel like he wants to double his original weight. Right now he is already 12.5 lbs! Ayayay!

Mikko is really growing up fast! But no, he’s not allowed to eat cake yet! Tee hee! But you know something? I feel like my life’s playing on fast forward now and probably the next thing I’ll know is he’d be potty training if not running around and driving me crazy. LOL!

Nonetheless, I love documenting everything I can as my little man grows bigger up and to watch him with all the different faces that he makes is just adorable. It melts my heart every time. Kinda reminds me of Tuzki (兔斯基) and those cutesy messenger emoticons.

And there’s plenty more from where that came from!

It really is a fascinating thing to see how many expressions Mikko can make in just a matter of seconds! Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to guess what he wants to say. Since he can’t talk yet, his facial expressions - the MIKKOTICONS say it all!

At a month old, Mikko can’t really see yet. But according to his pedia, he has very advanced motor skills. Remember THIS POST about rolling over onto his tummy by Day 15? CLICK HERE.

And now that he’s a month old, he seems to be attracted to light! Check out this comic I made (and note his facial expressions— the Mikkoticons!):

In the future, I have a feeling this boy’s going to be a “techie" too! Just like his mom. (Ahem!) Well, what do you think? I do intend to teach him everything I know about technology and raise him to be aware of it and how it can make life more productive and much easier, as well as remind him to be responsible enough to use it and not to abuse it.

But for now my baby darling is still a helpless little boy. He needs to be fed and bathed regularly.

He is changing before my eyes but his skin is still like a baby’s. We still need the gentle care of JOHNSON’s Baby Milk Bath, with Vitamins A&E and 100% more milk proteins to nourish developing skin.

BUT WAIT! There’s more!!! Now you have a chance to win a cool gift pack from Johnson’s just by giving me a creative caption on top of your head for the baby photo set below:
